I participated in [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins this year and as my picks were not quite as awesome as they could have been I had to make a Claude Giroux/Danny Briere (or Brioux) mix for [livejournal.com profile] andthenextday. The mix with lyrics and brief commentary (it was posted at 1am so it’s pretty brief) is at the comm.

However, the zip file is here if anyone wants to DL – even if you don't know anything about the pairing it has some good songs. (96MB).

Tracklist if you're curious )

Job: eh
Wine drank this evening: perhaps more than I should have.
Suits feelings level: high. seriously high. Why do I watch sneak peeks?
Time to the UK/Europe trip: 4 weeks!

I also caught up on The Slash Report while at work yesterday. Yeah … that was an interesting choice. Who knows what sort of facial expression I was pulling in the elevator on the way out the door, or in the biscuit aisle of the supermarket. (I was listening to the 50/50 tropes ep by the time I was in the supermarket, and if anyone is familiar it was THAT discussion near the end. *shudders *).

I need to go through the VVC vids but I have seen [personal profile] china_shop's Ben/Leslie vid and it's delightful. <3

Fringe: Forced Perspective )

I saw the Muppets this afternoon. Adorable!

More exclamation points this way )

The Toy Story short that ran before it was awesome too.

I also saw the trailer for The Pirates: Band of Misfits which is being done by Aardman Studios. It looks so much fun.

In my effort to catch up with all the movies I want to see (still on the list: Tintin, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Melancholia ... I think I've given up on the Midnight in Paris thing ) I also saw Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy on Thursday. I liked it, the acting is great and the cinematography is awesome and well, spies. I do not recommend it if you're tired though - it is not a fast paced film.

And because this post is clearly all about the movies, I saw bits and pieces of The Back-Up Plan today - I say bits and pieces because despite the constant presence of Alex O'Loughlin's face, it was a pretty painful viewing experience. Damn you Tumblr .gifs for making me curious. It is a very pretty face though ...

Random vid rec: It's Raining Men - starring many a man from period dramas. Matthew MacFadyen, Colin Firth, Dan Stevens, Alan Rickman, they're all there. Quite nice editing too on top of being pretty amusing.

This weekend has just disappeared. *sigh* I did however see The Dresden Dolls last night. I'm not quite as big a fan as I used to be but the did a 3+ hour set with a version of the time-warp, a cover of "The Mercy Seat," a cover of "War Pigs" and all their hits. It was pretty epic and they looked like they were having so much fun with it. Glad I went in the end. Live music ftw.

So, I had the best of intentions of going home after work and cooking myself a healthy dinner and doing things like applying for jobs. What I actually did was have a couple of beers and curry (It had vegetables in my defence) with friends and came home and played around on the internet. Yeah. It's not that surprising.

I did however get some potentially good news about a possible extension of my contract at work, which would be nice, but I am remaining cautious about the whole thing.

In my playing around on the internet I did come across some things I wanted to rec.

First, this awesome amazing Wire vid. Beautiful Struggle by [personal profile] sdwolfpup. It's a Carver vid to a Talib Kweli song and OMG I love it so much. It's just so amazingly done and Carver and Bodie and Randy! After watching it I was so disappointed that I don't own the show on DVD so I could re-watch some things. I loved Carver and his journey so much on the show and this vid really did it justice.

And then two H50 fics:

just your typical saturday (1030 words) by faviconsomehowunbroken

Wherein there is Steve and Danny and a cat and it's a little crack-y but also so in character and adorable. Adored it.

Wish You Were Here (535 words) by faviconimaginarycircus

Gorgeous Steve and Catherine scene with beautiful imagery and I really love them.

And there was some sort of Avengers trailer, which totally contributed to me arriving later to work this morning than I had intended.

I admit this week was a whirl of hiding from the snow, (yep more snow) unhealthy food, Hawaii Five-0 fic and lots of pictures of Alex O'Loughlin. But today I did book flights back to Wellington! (Arrive Tues 30 Aug).

My boxes also arrived from the UK. Totally forgotten what I'd packed but it's nice to be reunited with some things like my S1 Fringe DVDs and some things I picked up in Europe. All my stuff is together. Now, just to sort it before I fly out.

As you could possibly tell from the above, Hawaii Five-0 has sort of totally taken over my brain. The last fandom I embraced this quickly on the basis of fic, having seen hardly any episodes, was Torchwood* or maybe SGA - how I fell into the latter's fic hole is sort of fuzzy in my mind. It's a very different experience than when I fell for Fringe, where I watched the source first and where fic is sort of light on the ground. However, it's still the same, enjoyable 'wheee new fandom' rush. Love it.

I did actually watch the H50 pilot on Wednesday though, taking the total episodes I've watched to: 3! Although, thanks to Tumblr, clips on YT, reading recaps and fic, I'm spoiled in a general way for the entirety of S1 anyway.

Pilot thoughts - although given my tendency to ramble it's spoilery for a lot of the Steve plot in S1 )

* In fact I still haven't seen a full season of TW, unless you count Children of Earth and well the less said about that the better as it's one of the reasons I don't read TW fic anymore and couldn't care less about the show. (I'm sorry Peter Capaldi, you were still awesome).

I would watch more but data caps are the devil. I'm seeing what I can get away with, and to be honest, I can see my resolve crumbling.

I'm also waiting for fandom to produce the 'Steve McGarret meets John Sheppard' or 'Steve McGarrett meets Brad Colbert' fics I know it has in it. This is making me realise, that I have a thing for shows with members of the US military.

Two random H50 things:

Vid rec: You, Me and Steve. Hilarious, and so true.

This is a little old now, but I was going through delicious bookmarks and found this post: Top 20 Steve/Danny moments. Just, ridiculous human beings. And this was only up to 1.18!

I should also put together a recs post, but I've been keeping my delicious up to date with fics I've enjoyed.

Today was training and the Inbox of Mayhem (seriously, coordinating 150 people sending in forms, and telling them, 'no sign it properly,' 'no, you can't do that,' and recording their answers and forwarding on queries and ... argh. Tomorrow promises to be no better. At least I'm busy?

Went to the travel agent yesterday to discuss flights home. Scary and sad and exciting and stressful and all sorts of things. Flights via the US including a two week stop over flying in and out of New York is ... financially doable. Though it is frightening to commit to dates in five months time when my job situation is a little precarious. But then if I don't book this at this price (and I have to book flights home at some point anyway) and potentially miss out on a trip in the US I will kick myself ... so uh, early July? Anyone Boston/New York/DC-ish want to catch up? ;)

I meant to go to bed early tonight. As you can see that has gone so well. As it always does.

Have some Festivids recs:

High School Never Ends (The West Wing) - hilarious mash-up of song and fandom. I love it.

Paper covers rock (The West Wing) - a really well done Hoynes-centric vid that covers the period after his resignation. Slightly sinister in tone. It's really cool.

TV Taught Me How to Feel (Community) - Abed-centric vid. Great song choice, even if it s an insanely earworm-y Marina and the Diamonds song. Abed <3

Space Oddity (Community) - Troy and Abed vid. Interesting song choice with the Bowie but it really does work. God, I love them.

Float On (Finding Nemo) - oh it's just adorable. It's one of my least favourite Pixar movies (except for the turtles, who are awesome),but this makes me wonder if I should give it another go.

Blue (Hot Fuzz) - awesome editing, badass White Stripes song choice, just love it.

Friends (How I Met Your Mother) - great clip choices, and it just works so well. <3

Teenage Dirtbag (Scott Pilgrim vs The World) - the most perfect song choice, and great editing on top. Awesome.

Columbus & Talahasee (Zombieland) - zombie killing to ZZ Top. Great song choice and tonnes of fun.

Resistance (Star Trek: TNG) - vid with Picard and Data set during First Contact. Lots to think about and just a great song choice. I need to watch this again.

Oh, I saw Black Swan on Monday. It was pretty much exactly what I was expecting. I liked it, thought it was visceral and interesting, but I wasn't blown away. Natalie was really good though.

My week has been a little blah. I need to find another job. Not that the one I have is all bad, but I am not a PA (and nor was I originally hired to be one), and organising meetings is so not my idea of fun.

But I had a nice time last night watching DVDs with my friend which included Fringe S2 from 'Brown Betty' through 'Over There Part II.' <3! Watching also involved a lot of defending of Peter, but to be fair my friend was just hassling him because he knows about my thing for Josh. Mmm, he looked good on an HD TV.

Earlier in the week, instead of doing something productive with my free Monday, I mainlined the episodes of the Good Wife I hadn’t seen, which was pretty much all of S2. I am now all caught up, and oh, l love it.

Squee, really, that's all that's here )

There are also Fringe spoilers about:

Spoilery talk because I am missing this show like woah )

Links:

1. Too adorable 2 year old talking about US Presidents. You will never hear ‘Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’ said more adorably

2. Sometimes I wonder why I check the comments on ONTD posts, but then sometimes they deliver gold like this. The Tenth Doctor: A Musical - Amazing Dr Who music video covering Ten’s … tenure. Awesome music choices, and just go watch it. It’s so well done.

3. Andrew Garfield and Emma Roberts are pretty together while filming the new SpiderMan movie. I totally rolled my eyes when I heard about this prequel/reboot/whatever, but I’m actually quite keen to see it now. Blame my increasing interest in/respect for Andrew Garfield and Emma Roberts. I need to see Easy A and Never Let Me Go

4. Stephen Colbert is adorable - a video of him at a taping.

This Arsenal vs Leeds game has been so stressful and potentially could have been incredibly depressing. For fuck's sake, boys, could you make it more difficult for yourselves? Argh! CESC!! <3!

First day of temp job today. It went pretty well (I have a new database to bond with) and the people are nice. But wow, rush hour tube rides are so much fun. *rolls eyes* I have further reasons to be disgruntled about Clapham having three freaking tube stations.

Vid rec: Crazy in Love by [livejournal.com profile] sisabet and Cappy. Merlin/Arthur. Awesome song choice and so much fun.

I saw this A.V Club article on the Best mini-series and made-for-TV movies of the 00's on their Twitter feed and thought to myself 'Gen Kill has to be on this' and not only was it first on the list, but there was ASkars as well! <3

Random brief TV thoughts:

Merlin: The Witchfinder )

White Collar: Book of Hours )

Random Ugly Betty thought - only spoilery till late S4 )

Muse concert on Friday! And new Top Gear and Doctor Who episodes this weekend!

I need to re-do my icons. Oh, yes.
owlbeer: (Default)
So, my Sunday was really no more productive. Shocker. I went on a search for caffeine and ended up picking up Barrayar by Lois McMaster Bujold from a second-hand bookstore, and well, I've now finished it. OMG Vorkosigans, how so awesome?

I read The Warrior's Apprentice and The Vor Game quite a while ago now, and I've always meant to pick up the other ones and so glad I picked this one up as I've heard people go on about how awesome Cordelia is, and dude, they were so right. I love her. And Gregor! So adorable as a kid.

So, yeah, I recommend the book, and I have to pick up the others, though probably from the library as I'm saving. Yes, saving.

And while I'm recommending things, [livejournal.com profile] such_heights has an awesome multi-fandom vid focused on female characters and set to a Muse song. You should watch it. *nods*

And, Fake News Rumble is a Daily Show/Colbert Report web-comic, with apocalypses and evil villain Dick Cheney's, and lots of other cool things.

Hmm. I probably had other things to link to, but they escape me right now.
owlbeer: (Default)
I keep looking at my computer clock and going 'It's [enter time here] already?! Where has my Saturday gone?' Before saying to myself, 'um, self? You got out of bed at 2pm.' That might explain it *headdesk*

Anyway, a vid rec. Because I still seem to be in the midst of a vid renaissance, or I'm powerless before David Tennant, or something.

Moons of Jupiter by [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice.
Happy Ten vid! Honestly, it's just adorable. There are hugs and smiles and Ten, and it's awesome. (Spoilers through 'Utopia')
owlbeer: (Default)
1. There was no Daily Show tonight. :( However, C4 did play the Tom Cruise is in the closet episode of South Park instead. So awesome. I love that ep an insane amount, and it was Emmy nominated, which is just hilarious.

2. The Wellington Film Festival just ended and I managed to get to four films, which is four more than last year. Go me!

Helvetica which was a documentary about the font of the same name and really fascinating.
Manufacturing Dissent, another documentary but this one about Michael Moore and his manipulation of facts in his films, made by people who were actually fans. It was interesting, but I thought their case was a little flimsy. They made some good points certainly, but I walked out thinking 'well, you've told me I shouldn't trust Michael Moore, why should I trust you guys?'
Death at a Funeral which was a hilarious British comedy starring Matthew MacFadyen, Keeley Hawes and Alan Tudyk (Wash! And he holds a leaf at one point, and I totally muttered 'I am a leaf on the wind' to myself in the theatre). It was awesome.
The Long Goodbye which was a 1973 Robert Altman movie. I just basically wanted to see another Altman film, and I liked this one quite a lot. Elliot Gould was pretty damn awesome in it.

3. Muse has announced Australia dates, but no NZ ones yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed, even if they just come to Auckland, because I would totally fly up there to see them again.

4. I'm pimping out S3 Dr.Who to some friends of mine and last night we watched '42' through 'Blink'. Oh, show. Could you rock more? I was just blown away all over again by the last three especially.

5. Relatedly, this Dr Who vid is rather incredible. Muse + Dr.Who = Much love. And the editing is very effective. (Clips through all of S3. Link via [livejournal.com profile] slodwick).

6. Some of those bandom boys are awfully pretty ... I did not just say that.

7. Snowball scene in 'Inauguration'. (Link via [livejournal.com profile] musesfool). Oh, West Wing. I love this scene so much and it even gave me a crazy Toby, CJ/Danny bunny. WTF?

8. Finally, I'm reading Hunter S Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campiagn Trail '72 because it's been a while since I've read some non-fiction, and well, I'm a political geek. This quote gave me chills:

"It was a nervous thing to consider: Not just four more years of Nixon, but Nixon's last four years in politics - completely unshackled, for the first time in his life, from any need to worry about who might vote for him the next time around. .... When he stands at his White House window and looks out at an anti-war demonstration, he doesn't see dissenters, he sees criminals." (Fawcett Popular Library, 1973, p393)

... yeah.

Hmm, and here was me thinking I didn't have a lot to say. Should really be in bed though, as my day tomorrow is very meeting-tastic. How did I get a job that required me to attend all sorts of meetings? Honestly. Craziness.
