I am actually writing a DW/LJ post! I know!

Civil War spoilers obvs )

Keen to hear other people's thoughts/feelings. :)

God I need to sleep. I am awake purely due to the sheer amount of caffeine I've drunk today and feelings.

I am used to being a sports fan, but playoff hockey is something else. I am not used to this whole seven-game-series, games-everyday thing and it's ... something. Something quite stressful. I filled in a bracket as part of [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins, and I was going okay in the Eastern Conference but failing in the Western Conference ... until today, when the Eastern Conference was full of fail (I really expected the Rangers to win, and let's not get into the Pens scoring 10 goals - even though I was happy for JStaal) but Vancouver actually won a game! (I actually am fairly indifferent about Canucks/Kings but my bracket would prefer the Canucks).

So yeah, still with the hockey thing.

Game of Thrones 2x03 - contains future spoilers )

Haven't got to Mad Men, or last week's Community. I did watch The Good Wife which I found just okay, but I am very interested to see where everything is going.

I also probably had Fringe thoughts, but it's been a while since the episode. Overall, I liked it quite a lot.

I haven't done this ages:

Music meme!

1. If you'd like to play along, reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. You then list at least five songs that start with that letter.
3. Then, as I'm doing here, you'll post the list to your journal with the instructions.

[personal profile] musesfool gave me the letter C.

The Animaniacs - Countries of the World - I just had to when I got this letter. It's out of date now but it's so well done. Norway, Finland, Iceland, Sweeden ... Algeria, Ghana!

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert - Can I Interest You in Hannukah? -Jon and Stephen sing about holidays. We have dreidels/ What are they? / Wooden tops. We have candles/ What are they? /THEY ARE CANDLES! And when we light them, oh the fun it never stops.

The Arrogant Worms - Canada is Really Big - because I am all about comedy songs tonight apparently. We're the second biggest country, and if Russia keeps shrinking, soon we will be first.

The Gaslight Anthem - Casanova, Baby! - I think I can blame [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns for the number of TGA songs I have. I like them a lot. They have an Springsteen-ish feel but with a little more rock, maybe? This song has great drum beat and great lyrics. We could run all night / And dance upon the architecture / Come and take my hand /I'll do the very best I can.

Colin Meloy - Cupid (Sam Cooke Cover) - Choosing this song might go hand in hand with compiling this list at 1am. Anyway, I go through stages with Colin Meloy's voice but this is such a good cover.

Janelle Monae - Cold War - catchy, nice beat and I'll be honest, I like the fact that the title reminds me of history. This is a cold war / do you know what you're fighting for?

The Puppini Sisters - Crazy in Love (Beyonce Cover) (The Tuesday Weld Remix) - I have no idea how this ended up in my iTunes but I've become really fond of it. It's a remix of a Beyonce cover and it's got a old-school feel (Wikipedia describes The Puppini Sisters as a close-harmony trio), but danced up a little bit. Catchy as hell.

James Blake - CMYK - I love songs which sample other songs well, and this song is full of bits of different sounds and samples layered over the top of each other. Look I found her / in a red coat / look I found her.

-

I am awfully tempted to mainline Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America this weekend in preparation for the Avengers release on Wednesday. Midnight screening. \o/

Oreos are on special at the supermarket this week. I don't want to talk about how many packets I've bought. *shakes head at self* I also believe that being temporarily employed is making it worse, as it means I'm walking past the supermarket nearly everyday.

What self-discipline?

Day 12. A song from your favourite album

After I decided to use a different artist for each question(because otherwise Muse's "Absolution" would be the answer to this question), I knew this was likely to be a Stones album, but I thought it would be "Exile on Main Street." However, when I finally made the decision the other day, it ended up being "Let it Bleed." On a different day, it would have probably been Exile. It also could have easily been the Foo Fighters' "The Colour and the Shape" because that album rocks and I was in a very Dave Grohl sort of mood for a while there, but in the end I went with the Stones.

The Rolling Stones - You Got the Silver

Because I'm a sucker for Keith vocals and this is probably my favourites of his. Just, gorgeous.

Awesome live version and list of days )

Had a couple of relaxing nights at home before a pretty busy weekend full of birthday drinks, leaving drinks, a Chris Addison (!) comedy show, a British Grand Prix and a World Cup final (Sunday is going to be awesome, so happy we'll be getting a new World Cup winner). Can't wait till work ends tomorrow.

Big Bang Theory rocked tonight small spoilery mention from The Spaghetti Catalyst ) And I still think Sheldon and Penny's odd friendship is one of the highlights of the show. And Raj. <3

I seem to be in a bit of a Jane Austen mood. I'm reading Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, recently rewatched the Ang Lee movie of Sense and Sensibility - Emma Thompson is amazing, as is Alan Rickman, though I do think Colonel Brandon is almost a little too awesome as a character - and also caught a bit of of a Northanger Abbey movie that has made me keen to read that.

My visa runs out a year today. :( I've resigned myself to the fact that I'll probably be heading home barring some sort of fortuitous sponsoring situation. With the British economy the way it is, I just don't think it will happen.

Also, Ben and Jerry's 2-for-1 specials are really dangerous. Damn you Sainsburys!

Edit: Knew I forgot something! I've had these two awesome bits of Tony/Steve fanart open on two tabs for days and days. B&W kissing guh and Equally gorgeous kiss in colour. I love Tumblr somedays. It brings me so much pretty.

This meme intrigued me. Stolen from [livejournal.com profile] katmaxwell

Day 1. Your favourite song:

Mmm, difficult.

I'm going to be boring and share what appears at the top of my iTunes Most Played list, because if it's not my favourite song (which changes all the time, really), it's definitely in the running.

Radiohead - Paranoid Android

I just love it. The different sections and how it all comes together, and the rock-y awesome bit in the middle, and 'When I am king you'll be the first against the wall' is one of my favourite lyrics ever.

Music video (slightly NSFW) and Glastonbury performance of awesome )

The rest of the days list )

Unrelated to this song, I have an idea for an Iron Man vid and it's been bugging me for ages. I've taken a step towards making it today. Eep, vidding again. Well, I'm going to try anyway. Sometimes it ends well, sometimes it doesn't. This maybe the last time I mention it. ;)

Wow, LJ, long time no post.

However today, I saw Iron Man 2! Personally, I loved it, but I can see why some people might not.

Further thoughts below with the disclaimer that there is no way I can really be that objective about this movie. RDJ, one of my favourite actors, playing Tony Stark, a fictional character I love, I just, yeah, not so objective.

Better than the first? Not sure, but still, a fun ride )

This was also my first IMAX movie. Dude. It was pretty awesome, but I wish I was sitting a little further back.

Now pizza, and Dr Who when it turns up on iPlayer.

I've watched some really cool vids recently:

Hurricane by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro (BSG/Farscape, Aeryn/Starbuck)

I think constructed reality vids can be a little hit or miss but this is one of the best ones I've seen, the two sources are weaved together so well, and it really brings home the similarities between Aeryn and Kara. Also, hot.

Still A Rock Star by [livejournal.com profile] damned_colonial (Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson)

Just made me laugh in delight and want to see the movie all over again. Technically a break-up vid, but a very amusing one. Pink works surprisingly well with the clips.

Fever by [livejournal.com profile] talitha78 (Sherlock Holmes, Holmes/Watson)

Another fun Sherlock Holmes vid. Oh, they're pretty.

Also, as a result of this vid I had to go and find the song. I paid money for an Adam Lambert single, are you happy now, internet?

I didn't really mean to, but I did stay up and watch some of the Oscars, my next day at work suffered a little, but it's the Oscars, and I always watch at least a bit. This is one of the downsides to being in the UK instead of NZ; in NZ the Oscars at least happened during the day when I was at work and could keep an eye on them without losing sleep. ;)

Brief thoughts )

--

Iron Man 2 trailer came out on Monday!! I could not have wished for a better trailer. Well, okay, a little more Natasha and Pepper wouldn’t have hurt but still, so, so good. And RDJ looked goooood. I am so amped for this movie, in case that was subtly hidden. ;)

Embedded below with squee and exclamation point abuse )

I am amused that a majority of the comments on this Muse twitpic are about Matt's new coat, which is also admittedly, the first thing I noticed about it. Also, he seems to be growing his hair out, I approve of this, so much.

Now, I have White Collar and House waiting for me, and maybe I'll finally get around to watching the Caprica pilot.
owlbeer: (Default)
I went shopping on Oxford Street today, and I didn't feel like killing anyone ... much. It was actually quite nice, blue skies and sun, coffee and sushi. I needed a new winter coat (yes perhaps not the best time of year to shop for one but anyway) and I got a really nice gray one for a reasonable price. \o/ I love coats. I also got a shirt at H&M (that place is dangerous) and ended up walking past Forbidden Planet (just you know, happened to wander past) and spent less than 3 pounds! I prevailed over those three hard to resist words 'graphic novel sale' and all sorts of Iron Man toys but did end with the latest issue of Invincible Iron Man and a Iron Man button because I am not made of stone! So much awesome in one shop.

I seem to be going through a Tony Stark phase at the moment, as evidenced by all the Iron Man talk above. I've been reading more Marvel fic and read Ultimate Human which has Ultimate Iron Man as written by Warren Ellis. Awesome. I should catch up on more recent Ultimate!verse developments but from what I've see of Ultimates 3, maybe ignorance is bliss.

Swapping universes for a minute spoilers for Invincible Iron Man #24 )

Talking of Warren Ellis, I'm reading his novel Crooked Little Vein at the moment, it's pretty good so far. Trix is awesome.

I seem to be watching classic Jerry Springer shows. I blame my flatmate, he chose it. Someone is getting married on the set. Of course they are. There really is nothing else on, except Alexander and no way in hell am I going through that movie again. I could of course go to my room, but I am sort of enjoying it.

I have all my icons back (welcome back, paid account), but I do really need to redo them.

Also, if anyone has a tumblr/twitter/blip.fm/last.fm account they don't think I follow, feel free to pimp it here. I like adding new people. :)

Spent five hours locked out of the house today. Fail. So, while I was waiting for my flatmate to get home, I spent lots of time reading comics in the library (Balham Library have a surprisingly awesome collection) and then I grabbed a beer. Central London would have been much more fun to kill time in, but I was already on my way home when I realised that my keys were not in my bag.

Didn't get the Tuesday job, but had another interview today, and I think it went fine, but, well, we'll see, I guess. Trying not to think about it too much. Going to Cambridge tomorrow, so that will hopefully be cool. Camera doesn't seem to want to work properly though. Sigh.

Anyway, why I actually posted, comics rambling! (Combined from today and yesterday, when I was at Clapham Library reading comics, it seems to have been that sort of week).

I mostly read Avengers and Iron Man trades, because my tiny Tony Stark obsession rolls on.

New Avengers Vol 3 )

New Avengers: Secret Invasion Book 1 )

Iron Man: Doomquest )

I also re-read Iron Man: Extremis because it, and Warren Ellis, are awesome, and flicked through Ultimate Iron Man 2 and put it right back on the shelf. Orson Scott Card WTF are you doing to Ultimate!Tony>?! I am predisposed to dislike you already because of your wing-nutty politics, but seriously WTF.

And I finally read The Dark Knight Returns as everyone goes on about how it changed comics blah blah, so I thought I should actually give it a look. My usual dislike of Frank Miller aside, it was actually quite cool. Spoiler, of sorts )

Muse,

Thank you for releasing extra tickets to your UK (and European) gigs now you've finalised your stage set-up! Instead of flying to Germany to see you (which I was seriously considering and would have been awesome, but pricy) I now have (standing!) tickets to see your ridiculous faces at the O2 on 13 November.

You're my favourite,

*sparkly hearts*

K

Also, I seem to have another interview. Yay. It's not ideal (not full-time) but it does pay well and is at least something. Fingers crossed.

Now, to finish putting together [livejournal.com profile] blue_raven's shiny (I'm sending them today!) and do exciting things like grocery shopping and library book renewing.

It is however, an awesome looking day. So I imagine there will also be some having lunch and reading in the Common.

--

I seem to have fallen into a fic reading hole filled with Tony/Steve (Iron Man/Captain America) ... I may be some time.

Each of my last few posts has been about me mainlining some new (or long forgotten) fandom. Can you tell I have quite a lot of time on my hands? ;)
owlbeer: (Default)
Hi from the other side of the world. :)

London is overall, pretty awesome. It's crazy and big, but also new, amazing and fun. Friends here have been amazing, and through them I have sorted out a flat and done lots of cool things. The job quest is progressing, I'm applying for a few things a day and I heard this morning that I now have an interview on Wednesday morning. w00t!

I'm currently staying on the couch in the flat that I'm moving into in just under two weeks (my friend and her boyfriend live here now) and discovered that there is a place that does good fairtrade flat whites near by. Bliss. It's maybe a little further out of central London than I'd hoped, but by no means waay far out, and it's a cute house on a good tube line with nice people, so I call it a win.

I keep expecting it to hit me that I'm in London, but it really hasn't, so I don't think it's really going to.

So far I've been to the Tate Modern (I walked past on my first day here and had to go in) and it was like walking through an art history lesson, and I got to see a Jackson Pollock painting. So. Awesome. I've also been out to Canterbury to see the cathedral, which was phenomenal, possibly because it was the first medieval church I've been to, but I loved it. I also went out to Leeds Castle (which is in Kent ... yes) which was also very cool.

I did go to the Tower, which I've wanted to see since I was ten, and it was cool, but there were just too many people to really appreciate it, which was a little disappointing. I'm planning to go again when there's less people about.

Fandom wise, I haven't been up to a lot. I finished Torchwood (never wanted to slap Jack so hard in my life) and saw Half-Blood Prince (good, but the end was a little disappointing), and saw some S2 Dr Who via TV on Demand (omg awseome).

I did however, listen to the new Muse song, United States of Eurasia. Huh. It's a little different, but I do quite like it, especially the piano. Needs a bit of a listen, I think.

Also, I need to find the Iron Man 2 footage from Comicon. Surely it must be around. You can't fail me now, internet. I seem to be getting increasingly obsessed with it. I re-watched Iron Man on the plane over, and right now, it's my DVD I miss the most. Odd.

Link: Echo Chamber of Secrets: 30 Media Muggles and their Harry Potter Counterparts. Some of these are inspired. Jon and Stephen = Fred and George, Anderson = Luna, Bill Kristol = Umbridge, however I do think BriWi gets off a little harshly.

Housekeeping: I did a bit of a flist trim, because it was getting a little unwieldy, mostly people who haven't posted in ages or I haven't really talked to a lot and our interests have diverged. Hopefully no hard feelings, but feel free to defriend back, I get it.
