Year end TV meme )

La la la Yuletide. I meant to do things today but ended up drinking beer at lunch time and talking D&D as I'm gong to start playing again for the first time since 2005. There may have been a discussion about the alignment of the British Museum vs MoMA ... maybe. I love geeks.

Driveby rec:

The Legality of Being Human series by [archiveofourown.org profile] warmlightforallmankind (Derek/Stiles, Mike/Harvey)
AU where Stiles is Harvey's half-brother and it actually works pretty well and there is lots of awesome banter.

I am used to being a sports fan, but playoff hockey is something else. I am not used to this whole seven-game-series, games-everyday thing and it's ... something. Something quite stressful. I filled in a bracket as part of [livejournal.com profile] sixteenwins, and I was going okay in the Eastern Conference but failing in the Western Conference ... until today, when the Eastern Conference was full of fail (I really expected the Rangers to win, and let's not get into the Pens scoring 10 goals - even though I was happy for JStaal) but Vancouver actually won a game! (I actually am fairly indifferent about Canucks/Kings but my bracket would prefer the Canucks).

So yeah, still with the hockey thing.

Game of Thrones 2x03 - contains future spoilers )

Haven't got to Mad Men, or last week's Community. I did watch The Good Wife which I found just okay, but I am very interested to see where everything is going.

I also probably had Fringe thoughts, but it's been a while since the episode. Overall, I liked it quite a lot.

I haven't done this ages:

Music meme!

1. If you'd like to play along, reply to this post and I'll assign you a letter.
2. You then list at least five songs that start with that letter.
3. Then, as I'm doing here, you'll post the list to your journal with the instructions.

[personal profile] musesfool gave me the letter C.

The Animaniacs - Countries of the World - I just had to when I got this letter. It's out of date now but it's so well done. Norway, Finland, Iceland, Sweeden ... Algeria, Ghana!

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert - Can I Interest You in Hannukah? -Jon and Stephen sing about holidays. We have dreidels/ What are they? / Wooden tops. We have candles/ What are they? /THEY ARE CANDLES! And when we light them, oh the fun it never stops.

The Arrogant Worms - Canada is Really Big - because I am all about comedy songs tonight apparently. We're the second biggest country, and if Russia keeps shrinking, soon we will be first.

The Gaslight Anthem - Casanova, Baby! - I think I can blame [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns for the number of TGA songs I have. I like them a lot. They have an Springsteen-ish feel but with a little more rock, maybe? This song has great drum beat and great lyrics. We could run all night / And dance upon the architecture / Come and take my hand /I'll do the very best I can.

Colin Meloy - Cupid (Sam Cooke Cover) - Choosing this song might go hand in hand with compiling this list at 1am. Anyway, I go through stages with Colin Meloy's voice but this is such a good cover.

Janelle Monae - Cold War - catchy, nice beat and I'll be honest, I like the fact that the title reminds me of history. This is a cold war / do you know what you're fighting for?

The Puppini Sisters - Crazy in Love (Beyonce Cover) (The Tuesday Weld Remix) - I have no idea how this ended up in my iTunes but I've become really fond of it. It's a remix of a Beyonce cover and it's got a old-school feel (Wikipedia describes The Puppini Sisters as a close-harmony trio), but danced up a little bit. Catchy as hell.

James Blake - CMYK - I love songs which sample other songs well, and this song is full of bits of different sounds and samples layered over the top of each other. Look I found her / in a red coat / look I found her.

-

I am awfully tempted to mainline Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America this weekend in preparation for the Avengers release on Wednesday. Midnight screening. \o/

Oreos are on special at the supermarket this week. I don't want to talk about how many packets I've bought. *shakes head at self* I also believe that being temporarily employed is making it worse, as it means I'm walking past the supermarket nearly everyday.

What self-discipline?

Back in Wellington!

I had a good time in Christchurch on the whole, but I am so glad to be a home. I've got the house to myself and I've made pizza, and eaten chocolate and there may have been a tiny bit of passionfruit vodka as well. I am then going to continue my re-watch of Band of Brothers (so good, and hi baby!Damian Lewis) because I am embracing an anti-social New Year's Eve. Whole-heartedly.

2011 has had its ups and downs from earthquakes and broken hometowns, to leaving the UK, to moving back to NZ to everything in between. I think my highlight was my trip to US - one I've been meaning to make since I was small - I want to go back so badly, but I am so grateful I got a chance to see it at all The lowlight is I imagine pretty self-explanatory. Oh, Christchurch.

I kept meaning to do a fandom end-of-year meme and it just never happened.

However, I did just see this general RL end of year meme pop up on my flist:

2011: broken hometowns, travelling, returning to NZ )

-

I may have watched all of Downton Abbey from S1 through to the Christmas Special while on holiday. Oops? ;) Lots of love. Matthew! Mary! Anna! Sybil! While I adore Matthew/Mary, I also see interesting femslash possibilities. Hmm. Anyway, it's awesome, and Maggie Smith is amazing. <3!

-

Yuletide must have kick-started my languishing writerly tendencies, because I wrote 350 words of H50 fic earlier today and I still really want to write something about Steve and Jenna because I remain fascinated by their friendship/relationship, and I'm totally going to sign up for [livejournal.com profile] picfor1000.

Talking of Yuletide: my recs are on pinboard. Some awesome fic, especially the @mayoremanuel one. That was fucking amazing, and made me order the book mentioned in the notes. Oh, and Blackadder at the Occupy movement - that was genius too.
owlbeer: (natalie portman smile)
1. Someone wrote me a really cute Cal and Della ficlet for Yuletide Madness! And it was a sleeping ficlet! I love, love sleeping ficlets and it wasn't even in my Yuletide letter. This person is psychic, clearly.

I have been assembling my Yuletide recs on my delicious page. Didn't get through as much as I had hoped before the reveal - but then the reveal won't stop me continuing to read. *hearts Yuletide so much*

2. Year-end fandom meme:

A pattern will slowly emerge here. It's subtle. ;) )

3. Boris Johnson (Mayor of London) wrote a slightly insane editorial asking for Keith Richards to be given a knighthood. First off, Boris haven't you got better things to be doing? Also, if you knew your Stones history, you'd know how much shit Keith gave Mick for his and I would be so surprised if he accepted it. Still, just WTF?

I thought I had more to link to or mention but I can't remember right now. Most of my tabs are links to pretty pictures on Tumblr or Josh GIFs (*stares* I really need to see Americano .... )

Oh shit, yes, a) I finally saw Daniel Radcliffe on QI! I don't quite know how I missed he was going to be on it Christmas Eve. His extensive knowledge of random facts and nervousness was extremely endearing, and b) I went to a Scott Pilgrim screening and Q&A last night with Edgar Wright. Very cool. Still love the movie and Edgar was adorable, as was the geeky audience. <3

Going out for a few drinks at friends' house in a bit. Should hopefully be a quiet one, but not sure it will work out that way tbh.

Happy New Year, all! Whether it's already gotten to you or will arrive shortly.

I always like this meme:

1. Reply to this post with 'give me a letter' (or something similar) and I'll assign you a letter.
2. List (and upload) 5 songs you love that begin with that letter.
3. Post them to your journal with these instructions.

[livejournal.com profile] aurora_84 gave me the letter J. Which was more difficult than I was expecting. As it turns out I don't have that many J songs. *resists the urge to do the maths to figure out what % of songs in iTunes start with J*

The White Stripes - Jolene (Dolly Parton Cover) - one of my favourite White Stripes tracks, and just an awesome cover.

Paul Oakenfold - James Bond Theme - dancy James Bond theme. From the fairly horrendous movie Die Another Day but it's catchy and I have a soft spot for dance remixes of James Bond music. (see The Propellerheads' version of On Her Majesty's Secret Service - so awesome).

Kasabian - Julie and the Moth Man - slightly random track from the Underdog EP. Interesting lyrics, but infectious in the way Kasabian can be. (I get to see them at Isle of Wight - yay! They were awesome live when I saw them at BDO). (.m4a)

The Black Keys - Just Got To Be - awesome guitar and a nice blues-y feel.

David Bowie - The Jean Genie - you can't really go wrong with Bowie from this era.

Also, randomly because I listened to these tracks today at work and was reminded how much I love them:

The Wombats - Kill the Director

Catchy as hell and just such great lyrics. Though I'm a acting like I'm in an Eastenders episode / If this is a rom-com kill the director / ... and so with the angst of a teenage band / here's another song about a gender I'll never understand / ... this is no Bridget Jones ...

The Weakerthans - Watermark

I love these lyrics. So much. Speech will spill on space / our little cups of grace / ... the airports almost always empty this time of the year / so let's go play on the baggage carousel ...

Quiet weekend planned. Yay. (I will conquer you Flickr uploading, I will). And it might snow, which is way early for London. Fuck it was cold out in town tonight. Brrr.

Have reached Season 2 of Community. Still awesome. OMG paintball episode!

Fringe has still eaten my brain. Nom.

And although I am pretty disappointed Arsenal lost to Braga in the week it does mean that the Champions League game I am going to in two weeks has pretty much become must win! Now, I'm just crossing my fingers I get to see Cesc play, or at least come off the bench.

Random vid recs:

A Fringe vid dedicated to Peter's love of coffee. Yes, really. It's in so many episodes, and needless to say I adore it! Peter + coffee = OTP.

Harry Potter - Marching On. The trio (and friends) through all seven movies to date. So well done, and reminded me why I'm still so fond of these books. Clips include some very non-spoilery ones from DH Part 1.
owlbeer: (tony coffee)
Feeling a bit blah, but need to go out and be social in a bit, which might be interesting. Also need to decide quickly if I want to go to Portsmouth tomorrow to see the HMS Victory and the sea. The sea! I really want to get out of London for the day, but the weather is supposed to be sort of average and maybe it would be best to leave it for a better day. I think the sea is going to win me over though ... I really miss living on the coast.

Also, I should be getting excited about Belgium/Netherlands/Scotland but there might be strikes at a few UK airports that weekend including you guessed it, the one I fly from on the Friday night. *sigh* I cannot tell you how much I hope that gets worked out because my whole week trip depends on me being in Brussels, so if is a strike, I still have to get there, and I don't want to book anything too far in advance as a back-up and then have the strike get worked out and be out a lot of money. Heathrow closed. On a Bank Holiday weekend. I .... they've got to stop that surely? *headdesk* Things like this make me wonder why I came over, and no I don't really mean that, but still, it crosses my mind. Wellington seemed so much easier.

The most recent Mad Men episode was awesome. Awesome women FTW )

It's perhaps a bad sign that the last Sherlock episode is sitting paused about a third of the way through in another tab, isn't it? I feel like I should be enjoying this so much more, and it's not that I dislike it, it just wasn't holding my attention before. *shrugs*

Wow, I need to tidy my room, but I can't see that happening somehow.

And because it's been a while and that music meme doesn't seem to be happening:

Ask me my Top Five Whatevers. Fannish or otherwise. Any top fives. Doesn't matter what, really. And I will answer them in a comment.

Shower time now, I think. Yes.

Oh, one happy thing. I've been helping out with testing and the like for AO3, and there is a tutorial now up about running a gift exchange challenge that I wrote. :D

Random Josh Jackson link: sitting beside Big Bird being interviewed on Jimmy Kimmel. Seriously. That must have been so surreal. Josh just seemed incredibly amused.

Musics!

Meme stolen from [livejournal.com profile] woolly_socks:

Put your itunes/media player/whatever on shuffle.
Upload the first ten songs that come up for your flist.

I admit I skipped a couple of songs that were by the same artist and also a couple of other songs. ;)

The Shins - Caring is Creepy
Solomon Burke - Don't Give Up On Me
Santogold - Creator
Green Day - When I Come Around
Jay-Z - DOA (Death of Auto-Tune)
Belle and Sebastian - Piazza, New York Catcher
The Perishers - Sway
Mike Doughty - I Hear the Bells (my iTunes was clearly feeling a little VMars-y)
X-Men the Animated Series: Opening Credits (yes, really. I loved that cartoon, it started my X-Men geekery)
Oasis - The Importance of Being Idle

I am a little amazed there are not Muse or Rollings Stones songs there.

I am sitting in bed because it's cold, but eating ice-cream. In my defense it's Hagen-Dazs Cookie Dough ice-cream, so I think that's understandable. ;)

Haircut was a success. There is far less hair on my head and it feels good.

Also, if you haven't seen the Charlie Brooker clip from this week's Newswipe that skewers news stories and how they're presented, you should. It is all sorts of awesome. I embed it below.

I <3 Charlie Brooker )

My plans for the evening involve the internet ... and that's really about it. Happiness.

I did stay up and watch the Golden Globes last night, for reasons passing understanding, but I bailed after the Best Series Drama because sleep was quickly becoming a more important need. I survived relatively well today considering

Brief thoughts )

Note to self: Just, don't read the ASkars/Kate Bosworth threads, there lies the crazy comments.

--

Reactions:

Sherlock Holmes: Not amazing, but a hell of a lot of fun to watch. RDJ and Jude were all sorts of awesome and I loved the soundtrack, but then it was Hans Zimmer, whose soundtracks I seem to be drawn to. It had some very similar notes to the PotC soundtracks actually.

Dollhouse 2x12 )

Avenue Q: Some friends and I went to see the Saturday matinee and it was so, so good. I already knew some of the songs (and omg 'The Internet is For Porn' is so good live) but the rest was just as great. I would definitely recommend it.

This meme amused me. Gacked most recently from [livejournal.com profile] musesfool

1. Bold the names of guys you'd definitely sex it up with.
2. Italicize the names of guys you might do after a little persuasion.
3. Leave the guys who don't do anything for you alone.
4. Put a question mark ? after the guys you've never heard of.
5. Strike the guys you wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole.
6. Add THREE more guys to the list.

Um, there's a lot of bolded text under here ...  )

--

I got offered a month extension on my temp contract, which is good, I guess, but I think I do need to look for something else. I really like the crazy people I work with, but it's not really what I'm interested in, and I keep watching my friends book holidays in Europe and with this current job, I'm just not going to be able to do that. I came here to live in London, but also to see Europe, so I'll have a look around and maybe talk to my recruiter. *sigh*

The episode I just watched of Law and Order: UK was actually pretty damn good, and there was Jamie and Freema. Very pretty.

Also, wow the ITV News reports from Haiti are just, yeah. Need to remember to donate when I get paid.

Flash Forward: White to Play )

1. I finished reading One Bullet Away, which was really good, and moved on to Imperial Life in the Emerald City by Rajiv Chandrasekaran, which I've been meaning to read for ages. After ten pages I can already tell it's going to make me angry, and that's even knowing a lot about the period of the Iraq War it covers. Interesting though.

2. I am worried for Jenson Button. (And this article by Martin Brundle didn't help). While I wouldn't mind if Reubens or Sebastian Vettel win, and they do both deserve to, my heart is with Jenson. I really hope he pulls it off.

3. And because it's been a while:

Give me a fandom and I will tell you:

• OTP
• Runner-up pairing
• Honorable mention(s) pairing
• Crack pairing(s)
• Ship everyone else seems to like, but I don't
