Wow, LJ, long time no post.

However today, I saw Iron Man 2! Personally, I loved it, but I can see why some people might not.

Further thoughts below with the disclaimer that there is no way I can really be that objective about this movie. RDJ, one of my favourite actors, playing Tony Stark, a fictional character I love, I just, yeah, not so objective.

Seriously. Loved it.

Jon Favreu was right in the interview I saw with him recently, it's not a typical way to deal with a superhero movie. The whole middle section dealt with Tony's state of mind and had relatively few action sequences. When Tony and Rhodey basically ripped apart the mansion at Tony's birthday, that was seriously hard for me to watch. Without dealing with the drinking, it showed how much self-destruction he is capable of and the impact that has on the people around him, which is a very important thing when doing a movie about Tony Stark.

The action sequences were great and bonus F1-type cars! At Monaco, no less.

Parts of it were a little ridiculous, but then, comics are a little ridiculous, and this isn't as 'real world' as The Dark Knight or other movies of the same type. The senator swearing at Tony at the committee hearing was probably the one that annoyed me the most.

I thought they may have amped Tony's arrogance up a little too much, but then that may be that I'm used to the comic book version who is a little less arrogant (only a little), and is in a different place that this Tony.

Did love the little touches with him cooking.

I didn't realise John Slattery was going to play Howard Stark. I love him, and he was great. I really liked Tony watching the old movies back, but then I do like tortured!Tony and there was plenty to go around in this movie.

Samuel L Jackson was awesome. That is all.

The way they brought SHIELD in with offering Tony a way to alleviate his symptoms was I thought a nice touch. Deftly done. And the doughnut scene was hilarious. "I don't want to join your secret boy band."

And now we now why it's a triangle on his chest on all the posters. ;) I'm sort of partial to the circle, but it still works.

I don't know it the movie is quite as funny as the first, but there were some great one-liners, most of which escape me right about now. "He wants a slot, Christine" was one I couldn't quite believe they got away with.

I was impressed by Sam Rockwell. I still hold grudges about the Zaphod performance in Hitchhiker's Guide (which yes, I don't think was his call), but he was really cool in this. As was Mickey Rourke. I really should get around to watching The Wrestler.

Do I need to mention that RDJ rocked? Because he did.

Comic book shout-outs: "I would accept Secretary of Defence ..." Loved it. Pepper's secretary being called Bambi, and Stan Lee cameo as Larry King! Captain America's shield! There were also probably other ones I missed.

I did find what they did at the end a little interesting. Firstly, hooking Tony and Pepper up, which I didn't think they were going to do. I'm not opposed to it (much), but I'm also a little wary. Depends how they make it work I guess. Or given the fact it's Tony, how it falls apart. Also, only making Tony a consultant on the Avengers project ... interesting. Not bad, just interesting. I imagine it changes but still, will wait to see what happens there.

Shallow: Jesus Christ, pretty people. RDJ rocked the dark clothes, especially in the prison cell with Ivan and the scenes where he ripped up his mansion to synthesize the element were so hot. So hot. And was all using his brain and doing science-y stuff, and just, guh. Scarlett, Gwyneth and Leslie were all gorgeous.

I'll be interested to see how it holds up on a second viewing. I didn't notice any issues with the pacing or anything this time around, but I saw that was one of the criticisms people had. I also know, there is criticism that it falls down in the middle act, but the first one had a whole section that I usually find myself skipping when I watch the DVD (the scene in the cave when he builds the suit, I just find it a little slow and it goes on too long), so it had issues too. ;)

Finally, the choice of ACDC was inspired. Plus Queen and The Clash. So good.

This was also my first IMAX movie. Dude. It was pretty awesome, but I wish I was sitting a little further back.

Now pizza, and Dr Who when it turns up on iPlayer.
