Yep, I've left it a long time again.

Despite the heat (which wasn't that bad really) and the odd hiccup (banks grr) the holiday to the US was awesome. New York was insane, huuge, varied and hell of a lot of fun, Boston was really nice and Bruins obsessed (and I got to have an awesome time meeting [livejournal.com profile] tangleofthorns) and DC was ... a lot of walking, but also really great to visit. I did all the big tourist-y things, and saw some things I've wanted to see all my life. So, well, well worth it. Also, insanely good travel luck on the way home including a business class upgrade and avoiding one flight delay and one flight cancellation.

New Zealand is fine. I have missed it and I'm enjoying Christchurch's idea of Winter - which seems to be cold nights and 13 degree days with blue skies and sunshine. The aftershocks haven't been too bad, but the holes and the not going into town and ... yeah, it's a bit to get used to. The city is both better and worse than I thought, if that makes any sense. I've mostly been lazing around the house and adjusting, but I should get on the job thing and make a decision about staying here v.s going back to Wellington. Despite the hassle and the expense, I think going back to Wellington is more likely.

I just spent some time tidying some things from the US trip/the UK and reading over some old entries (why do I do that?) it just made me all nostalgic. It all seems so far away already. *sigh*

Fandom wise, it's still a lot Fringe (and trying not to think too hard about the Comicon panel and the lack of Josh on it), but I'm trying to start a West Wing re-watch because it's been ages and now me and my full DVD collection have been reunited.

I've also been working my way through the rest of The Song of Ice and Fire - thanks to my friend having them on her bookshelf here - yay.

I'm now most of the way through 'A Storm of Swords: Part 2' - spoilery )

There really should be new icons - and I've been saying that forever but now I have time.

And yeah, holiday photos really need to be loaded somewhere.

Edit: Oh random vid rec: Fun in the Blue verse (Fringe) - vid looking at the weird and amusing moments on this side. Really well put together and just a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Been talking with my parents quite a bit (mostly via FB chat) and wow. It keeps hitting me again, especially the CBD. I spent so much time there as a kid after school, and as an adult and some of my favourite parts of Chch are there and now ... not so much. Parents are fine, they have friends who have lost houses, but they are fine and almost have water now too. Dad's company have been helping store and deliver water and has said that the roads are just insane.

[livejournal.com profile] karenhealey posted this which tells some of the good news stories (well okay, more positive stories) from Christchurch in the form of a letter to ex-pats from someone in Christchurch. There's a vigil in London on Wednesday, about 1,000 people are supposed to be going. Definitely going to try and be there too.

Random link: What happened on the @MayorEmmanuel twitter feed on Chicago Election Day. Whoever did this is a genius.

I'd like to say I'm going to get out of the house today but honestly I'm only going to get so far as the supermarket to get brownie ingredients for desert tonight and then watch the Carling Cup final. C'mon Arsenal, one trophy would be nice and you're doing so well right now.

I imagine most have heard by now, but there was another earthquake in Christchurch nearly 24 hours ago, this one shallower and causing significantly more damage.

Thankfully, all my friends and family are safe. Had a nervous few hours this morning, but heard about everyone by about 2:30am my time. My family's house is a little damaged, but it's nothing in comparison to what others are going through.

Have been really distracted all day. Feel so far away, and it's so weird to see everything going on as normal over here. Also, stating the obvious, but when news stories use words like, 'shattered,' 'destroyed,' and 'in ruins' to describe your hometown, where you lived for 17 years of your life. It's ... something else.

My thoughts are with everyone who hasn't heard from their family members or friends yet.

The bit I can't get over is this has happened twice in 5 months. I was just talking to my parents last weekend on Skype and we still spent at least 10 minutes talking about the aftermath from the last earthquake, and now so many things are worse than when they started. Seeing the Cathedral and Provincial Buildings like they are now was just so hard to see. Although, a little selfishly perhaps, I was glad to see the Arts Centre seems to have only been slightly damaged. It's maybe my favourite part of Christchurch and to see it gone would have been heartbreaking.

Hang in there, Christchurch.

I'm back! Sort of. Currently using my flatmate's laptop, so don't have access to all my files/programs but do have sweet, sweet internet.

I had a good but exhausting time (and saw a lot more of rural Belgium than I had planned, long story and Edinburgh is OMG awesome) but don't think I have a huuuge post in me just yet. We'll see how I go.

I've also been distracted by the fact there was a 7.0 earthquake in my hometown yesterday evening (my time). Everyone is fine, my parents' and brother's houses are fine, but it was a little fraught there for a while, hearing the news while on the tarmac at Edinburgh airport, not being able to use my phone for over an hour, and then trying to get someone to respond (parents need to charge their phone more). I finally talked to my brother when I was on the train back from Gatwick (*hearts cellphones*) and while he didn't know where my parents were initially (they went for a walk idk), they turned up.

Some of the photos have been pretty insane. Places I know and used to walk past in the CBD all the time are collapsed. Thankfully it happened at night, so most people were asleep and there have been no reports of fatalities. The city was lucky all things considered. Still, pretty scary, and for me, it has made me feel really far away.

Look after yourself, Christchurch.
