Reactions Times Four
Feb. 4th, 2005 01:30 pmA couple of reactions to a few things I've seen/read recently:
First
I enjoyed it, but I wasn't blown away. If I compare this J.J pilot to the Alias pilot, (which I know isn't really fair, but such is life) I think the Alias pilot is definiltey better, but it still left me intrigued. Which is exactly what it was meant to do of course.
As far as characters go. Much love for Sayid and Charlie, (Dom, adorable as always) other than that I have no real strong feelings. The older guy (Locke? I think that's what I heard his name was) is intriguing and I like Michael, bust mostly because he's played by Harold Perrineau, who I adored as Mercutio in Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet (even though the rest of the movie really didn't do anything for me.)
In the end? I'll keep watching. (OMGWTFPOLARBEAR?!)
Second
Dude. At first I was not too impressed, but by the end? Damn. It was a wonderful movie. I can't really explain how I felt about it. It gave me a similar feeling to when I first watched 'Lost in Translation' and to a lesser extent 'Garden State.' It just had this feel to it. It made you think and presented this layered view of life, which I know doesn't make much sense, but that's how I see it. It wasn't a truly happy ending, it was a real ending. And while I am a sucker for a happy ending, sometimes it just doesn't work. (*coughMinorityReportcough* *coughAIcough*) Yes, still bitter. I need a life.
Also, being a backstory whore I am, I was also intrigued by the whole Howard/Mary angle. That she had her memory erased took me completely by suprise and definitely made me enjoy the movie even more. Kirsten Dunst was almost, not annoying in this film. She actualy did a pretty good job.
However, Jim Carrey. I don't think I'll mock your acting abilities ever again, and Kate Winslet was wonderful as always.
This totally better win the Original Screenplay Oscar, and it totally deserved more nominations.

Okay, now bearing in mind I like politics and I like comics, I expected to like this a little more. When I took the trade to the counter the guys at the comic store said it a 'wonderful series.' And while I enjoyed it, I wasn't blown totally away. Maybe it was just my mood. I mean, parts of it were very, very good, don't get me wrong, but the whole thing didn't really gel in my head. It might need another reading in a couple of days. Hmm.
Fourth and last
Bwa! While I still think last week's was a little better, this episode was certainly enjoyable. That song! That statue! Simon drunk! Preacher's hair! Not that the ep didn't have a serious point, but the humourous bits really worked.
I must admit, I didn't think it would take long, I've kind of started shipping Kaylee/Simon. They're cute together. Kaylee was my favourire as soon as I saw the first ep, but I've developed a likeness for Simon as well. Hell, I like all of them in their own way. Nathon Fillion does a gret job as Mal and Jayne is great as well. Wash is very cool, as is Zoe. The only characters I haven't got any real feel about are Inara and in a way River but that might be a time thing.
Also, it was only a matter of time. *headdesk*
