It’s been a good weekend

Yesterday I socialised:

In the early hours, I caught up with my friend, who has been over in the UK all year, on MSN for the first time. *Loves the Internet* It was so good to talk to her.

Later, met up with friends for lunch, played D&D and went over to friend’s house for a Johnny Depp mini-marathon. (PotC and Secret Window, which are two weird movies to watch after one another because at the start of Secret Window – which we watched second - I expected Johnny Depp’s character to talk like Jack Sparrow and come on to anything that moved. Needless to say, he didn’t.)

Today I fannishly obsessed about British TV programs:

All week I’ve been looking forward to a British murder mystery mini-series starring Martin Shaw as Adam Dalgleish, who is a character of P.D James. I’ve always liked the British murder mysteries with the wizened older detective like Inspector Morse, and this one looked really good. Plus, Martin Shaw! For reasons I haven’t fully explored, I love Martin Shaw. Loved A&E. (Yes, I know). Loved Justice John Deed. Just, love.

Martin Shaw playing cerebral detective = Tali’s week made.

Anyway, the mini series was really good (and was a two parter *mutters*) and caused me to tear down to the library in search of murder mysteries. I walked out with two Adam Dalgleish books. *coughs* Martin Shaw made me do it *coughs*

And also the second book in Neal Stephenson’s Baroque Cycle, The Confusion. Honestly, I think that series has the prettiest book covers I have ever seen.

And then came Red Cap.

So, so amused and I don’t really have a clue why. Maybe it’s just delight at the unexpectedness.

Ostensibly it’s a drama about an UK military investigations unit in Germany but it has a bit of a soap opera undercurrent to it. Kind of like WaT does, but the show’s cases aren’t quite so engaging and the show’s not as good. However, it’s still enjoyable and the characters are quite cool.

Now, why I’m so amused:

Relevant Characters:

Roper: Young-ish. The cute one. In unhappy marriage, in love with MacDonaugh.

MacDonaugh: Blonde female. Main character. In love with Roper.

Burns: Grumpy boss but lovable as he easily has some of the best lines and a great sense of humour. Always shown a bit of a soft spot for MacDonaugh but nothing serious.

Last Week:

Roper had a bad episode last week, got angry, MacDonaugh went to comfort him and they ended up kissing rather passionately in the stairwell. Burns sees them. Burns talked to Roper and convinced him to have another go with his wife. Roper does. MacDonaugh angsts.

This Week:

This week, Roper tells MacDonaugh he’s told his wife about them. Wife takes kids and goes back to the UK. Burns has his own angst about needing to apply for a commission to be an officer as he’s still a sergeant major and he’s been in the army for 20 years and they want him to move on. He (it appears) doesn’t want to be an officer. He then finds out about Roper’s wife leaving and goes absolutely crazy about Roper not fighting for his kids (it appears), later semi-apologises. MacDonaugh and Roper meet up after they think the case is over, are about to sleep together when cell phones ring and they’re called back in. Burns figures out they’re together. Roper tells MacDonaugh to come back to his place, she agrees. After case (which is about an affair between a female colonel and a male sergeant) wraps up, MacDonaugh gets ready to go out to see Roper, Burns goes to see her, tell her he loves her, she tells him to go. She never shows up to see Roper and she’s just a little bit weirded out and confused, as you would be.

Next Week:

Promo for next week: MacDonaugh not breathing, Roper and Burns both there. Burns telling MacDonaugh they can’t keep working together.

I totally didn’t see this coming! I’m a little bit of a Roeper/MacDonaugh shipper (though they’re going to be angst ridden as hell) but I also really like Burns. He's so snarky and so cool.

I mean, Burns admitted he loved her! Now first, I had to get over the almost Mary Sue feeling of ‘well, everybody just falls in love with her, don’t they’ but then I started laughing just thinking about it. There’s was a whole ulterior motive thing going on and I love it.

There are just little elements of the WaT triangle here, just little ones but with WaT I’m more emotionaly invested and don’t like Martin. While here I have less emotional investment and actually like both Burns and Roper. Burns has a bit of Jack feel to him, but with less angst as really, can any (non comic book) character out angst Jack Malone? I don't think so.

I mean, it’s probably going to go Roper/MacDonaugh because there’s mutual feelings there, but the Burns/MacDonaugh element is unexpected, and cool. And then there’s also the commission element, because Burns has got the promotion and will probably have to move on from the unit, away from MacDonaugh and appointing a successor, probably Roper. Then there’s next week’s ep, which is a little bit Fallout-esque.

: D

Perhaps I should be spoiler free for shows. This unexpected thing makes things kinda fun. : D

Such a pretty song.
