I finally caught up on Mad Men Season 3 in the weekend. I started on Friday night, and finished at 11am on Sunday morning. I loved it. And the new season starts in two weeks. Yaaay.

I tweeted when I finished it that it was a good but not great season, right up until the last three episodes when it was amazing. I stick by that. The last three, from the "The Gypsy and the Hobo," "The Grown-Ups" set around JFK's assassination and then "Shut the Door, Have A Seat" were just amazing TV. Jon Hamm is so impressive, and pay off for the ongoing storylines was great. The plotting is so, so good. (Except when they seemed to forget Betty and Don had a third child).

It was weird though, because I was grinning after finishing it, which is pretty odd for a series of Mad Men, which is not genuinely known for its shiny uplifting storylines. I blame this on Joan and Roger's awesomeness and the fact that at the end, everyone was actually moving forward in a positive way. (With the exception of Sally and Booby Draper, poor kids). Yes, it will no doubt crash and burn in a variety of ways next season, but for now, things are really looking up for them. Sort of.

Aaand today I have been all 'OMG Joan and Roger' in my head and re-watched some bits of episodes instead of doing the plenty of other things I should be. *sigh* But anyway, Joan and Roger. <3 I know Roger is at times a complete ass (and a silver fox smart-ass, which really doesn't help me out) and really doesn't deserve Joan but they have just amazing chemistry together, and he clearly cares for her a great deal. Their calls during "The Gypsy and the Hobo" and "The Grown-Ups" were just perfect, and also their small moment at the end of the finale.

I went over to re-read my awesome Yuletide gift Mixing the Bitter with the Sweet and there is a comment by Petra which is so perfect for them, "I love them together more than Roger can possibly deserve."

Also, and I may be reading too much into this, but his look after Annabelle said that she was glad he had found 'The One' made me think that he had, but it wasn't the woman he was married to. But then, I'm apparently a crazy 'shipper about these two now.

Another awesome moment: Joan cracking her awful husband over the head with the vase. Love her. So much.

I also am a little invested in the whole Don and Roger relationship. When watching old episodes, I remembered how close they were and then weren't for a lot of this season. It made me sad. They were a lot of fun together, possibly not a good influence on each other, but a lot of fun.

Peggy was interesting this season. A little bit less the focus of the season, but still intriguing. I loved her 'No' to Roger when she asked him to get him coffee. (Yeah, he's a bit too much in my head right now).

Also, Trudy rocks. I've been a little indifferent to her up to this season, but I really liked her. Pete doesn't deserve her.

Betty. Blah. January Jones is good, and you had to feel for her finding out about Don, but wow, Betty just shouldn't have had kids.

Need icons.

In other news:

1. The most recent True Blood ep was really, really blah. Tonight, even more than usual; Eric, Pam, Jessica and Lafayette were the only ones worth watching. Alcide is getting closer to that line, but isn't there yet.

2. British GP was interesting. Jenson had an awesome race and was adorable afterwards with the BBC commentary crew and Rubens Barichello. Seriously. Too adorable. I perhaps went on too much about that particular topic to my friend who was over. We were supposed to be applying for jobs together, but that didn't really happen.

3. The World Cup is over. :( I watched the final in a pub with some friends and well, it was ill-tempered to say the least and a little disappointing as a football match. I was supporting The Netherlands but Spain did deserve to win in the end. I was happy for Cesc. And while I am discussing Cesc. He needs to stay at Arsenal. Needs to. *nods with purpose*

4. Work was a little blah. Need to find a job out of the public sector as it's all getting a little scary and it's only going to make the job market worse. Happy thoughts.

5. The Muse clips from T in the Park looked a little lackluster but the short interview Matt and Dom did was amusing, if only because of how hungover Matt looked and the story of how he dressed up like a workman to see Prince.

I totally agree with you about Trudy. And Joan. And basically all the rest of it. I can't wait for the new eps, even though it's probably just going to come crashing down. OTOH, the theme of the series is 'Self-determination is good', and the trajectory is away from the stifling 60s, so maybe they will get to have nice things eventually? /unlikely rationalisation

I didn't hear it anywhere, it's just my reading of the series - doing the socially acceptable thing just makes everyone miserable, and they're only happy when they escape from expectations. One of the themes, anyway. But I am not holding my breath either!
