So, I may have spent all day at Armageddon. *sheepish look* However, it was well, well worth it.
I only planned to have a look around. I told myself I wasn't going to spend a lot of money, just listen to a couple of panels and yeah, I was deluding myself. But, Serenity on DVD for $15! I am not made of stone. *hearts Whitcoulls* So pretty. I also bought a badge, some NZ made comics and cool poster written and drawn by these girls from Auckland ... and Jewel Staite's autograph, but I'll get to that in time.
So, I had a look around, and I have to say I was impressed. There were a lot more people there than I thought there would be and some pretty cool stuff to do. It was a little small, but saying that I wasn't really expecting something massive either. It was nice.
I finally saw the latest X3 trailer, and it looks ... interesting. I think it's either going to rock or totally blow, there isn't going to be a lot of middle ground, and it's obviously Jean-centric and I've never really been a big Jean fan, I had to laugh though when Wolverine says to Rogue, 'I'm not your father' the guy behind me said, 'Dude. She doesn't want you to be her father.' Heh. Logan/Rogue 'shipper at heart obviosuly. I didn't realise it came out in like, a week. Whee, I think.
There were quite a few comic stands and I was sorely tempted by a few issues, but managed to hold myself back. I watched Phil Jiminez draw a few sketches and wow, they were gorgeous. I didn't say anything to him, or Geoff Johns when he showed up with some comics he had bought, because while I know their names, I'm not actually familiar with either of their work, not well enough to talk about it anyway. While the TV stars had rather large queues, there was hardly anyone hanging around them. I almost wish I'd sseen there panel yesterday. They seemed like nice guys, Phil especially.
As I walked around I almost ran right into Jewel Staite as she was being escorted to the signing table. Eep. She's so gorgeous in person. Also, the guy escorting her around was a friend of my flatmate and damn, I was jealous.
The first panel I went to was Jewel and Claudia Chrstian of Babylon 5 fames's panel on 'Women in Sci-Fi' and it was a lot of fun. Both of them came across as just lovely people and Claudia had a great sense of humour. There were some fun stories told, like the fact that Claudia's career lowlight was working with Stephen Segal. She said, 'I really don't need to elaborate on that at all, do I?' And got a big laugh. Jewel also told a really cute story about her and Nathan Fillion running into Stephen Speilberg and him asking Nathan, 'Do you remember me?' (From Saving Private Ryan) and then going on to say that he was a big fan of Firefly. I think perhaps the most interesting thing I heard Jewel say was about Kaylee's future character direction adnd that she would have loved to have seen her and Simon have a baby. I don't know if I can quite see that, and I say that as a Simon/Kaylee 'shipper but hey, it would be kind of cute, I suppose. Anyway, I enjoyed their panel a lot.
I was considering going for another walk around but ended up staying for John Billingsley's panel on Enterprise, having never seen an episode in my life, but I'm really glad I did because he ended up doing it with his wife Bonnie and they were totally insane. Running the microphones around the room themselves, having rather random conversations but it was just so much fun. There were even mentions of Archer/Dr Phlox slash by John! And dude, I just remembered (with the help of IMDb) why he looked so familiar, I thought it might be Stargate but he was in, 'Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail' playing the Peters' Projection map guy! Dude! I totally wish I'd asked about that. Okay, I probably wouldn't have but still, I can't believe I forgot that. I love that episode! So, yeah, so totally glad I stayed for that.
I wandered around a little more again before listening to most of the WETA panel given by Richard Taylor and Gino Acavedo. There's was mostly a talk, but I still remain just blown away at the amount of detail and research and thought that goes into their work. They gave this whole speech about the thought behind the tribe on Skull Island in King Kong and just, wow. Those guys are so great.
Anyway, finally, I was thinking about going home but then walked past the signing table for the umpteenth time and went, 'ah, screw it, I can't really afford it but when am I going to get another chance' and ran out to the ATM to get cash to get an autograph from Jewel Staite. I thought for a minute she'd left but she came back and she asked how I was, and I asked how she was and then asked for my name and made the Kylie Minogue reference that a lot of people make and I admitted I got that a lot, and then yeah, she signed a very cool picture of Kaylee I hadn't seen before. She was very sweet and yeah, did I mention gorgeous? I'm so glad I decided to do it.
And here's a couple of pictures I took. Sorry for the crappy quality. The lighting was bad and I'm not really the greatest with my digital camera.

The autograph its self.

Jewel and Claudia.
So, yeah. I had a good day. :D My first 'con' experience was pretty awesome.
Now, if you'll excuse me, there's a DVD I've been wanting to watch for a very long time now. ;)
