He's like a very, very pretty puzzle!

owlbeerI had a great weekend hanging out with friends, dressing like a cowgirl and eating fantastic Mexican food, but my living situation is still very, very ... shaky past this Saturday. I have put into place a back-up plan which I really, really don't want to have to use, but I think I'll have to. *sighs in resigned fashion* This will be going down in the books as one of my sillier decisions.
Anyway, on to the very pretty show that takes up far too much of my brain real-estate.
Oh, John. This episode caused me to have all sorts of think-y thoughts about John and his Air Force career (I was Googling Air Force bases before) and his past and really, I just adore this character. All the layers (from geek to action hero to little lost boy from old money) and fronts and secrets and how they all fit together. Like an extremely hot puzzle. ;)
So, uh yeah, I was never really going to hate this ep.
And on top of that, we had one of the slashiest scenes this show has produced, and uh, that's saying something. That scene! With the eye contact and looking away! And the awkward! It was so ... touching, in a weird and so them way. Oh <3!
I did not in my wildest dreams think we would get a scene like that between them. I thought at most we'd get a mention in passing why Rodney wasn't going, and we'd be damn lucky to get any acknowledgment that Rodney would have totally gone at all, but not that. I mean, I started kinda playing one in my head in the days before the ep (yes, horribly spoiled for this) but that paled in slashiness to what we got. Dude. Love the writers.
I did think the reason Rodney wasn't going was lame (and uh, used before) but as someone pointed out, Zelenka probably outright refused to go after what happened to him last time on that planet. ;) Also, I realise they needed a Hewlett light ep.
I liked the Nancy and John interaction. I thought it was really interesting. "Well, in his eyes it was the best thing I ever did." Ow. That had to hurt Nancy a little bit.
I need more info about his military training! He must have flown special ops or something after Nancy's comments about all the calls. My pet theory is that for at least some of his career he flew combat search and rescue, but really, I just want something plausible. Also, I really liked the scene in the car. "Just take care of yourself." "Well, you know me." "Yeah, that's the problem." Oh, John. <3
"Is this the house you grew up in?" "Yeah, one of them." o.O Honestly, if someone doesn't write some awesome John backstory fic, I might have to write some myself. You don't want that.
Also, yay for Competent!Sheppard talking about tactics and Scary Interrogation!Sheppard!
His interaction with Eva was cool too, in an understated kinda way. I can't really put my finger on why, but I really liked it.
And wow, lots of John rambling, but Ronon was awesome too. In a strong, silent, there for John way.
Dr.Lee was not just the butt of jokes and used for comic relief. Yay. He's always bugged me in SGA (haven't seen him in SG1) but here he was good.
And finally, just to bring down the tone. John in s suit! John in jeans! Ronon in black! Ronon in jeans! John in blue lighting! Fuck, this was one pretty, pretty ep. Seriously.

And since this post seems to have turned into John Sheppard, All the Time, a vid rec! My Vampire Heart bykeewick. Just a beautiful look at John with a focus on S4 (scenes up through 'Quarantine') and it made me look at some of the scenes in a new light. Just, gorgeous.
Okay, this song is a little too apt for this post. This song is totally going to fly up my iTunes play counts as nearly all of the songs at the top are SGA vid bunnies in one form or other. See what I said about the brain real-estate?
