Wow. My last post in here was about buying these DVDs and this post is going to be my reaction to them two weeks later. I should post more.
Overall
I liked it. A lot. I’m perhaps not as awed as I was by the first season but despite a few hiccups due to (I think) trying to do too much and it all getting away from them, I think they’ve still managed to put together a very, very good television show.
I did realise upon watching that I wasn’t quite as spoiler-free as I had hoped though. I knew about Billy, I knew about the Pegasus, I knew Lee got annoying and that there was Lee/Dee and that the last ep did a whole ‘One year later’ thing (a little too J.J, really, but it was nicely done) and that Gaius became President Oh well. It didn’t really impinge on my enjoyment of the show that much.
Particularly strong eps: Home Parts I and II, Downloaded and others whose names I can’t remember.
Iffy eps: That whole fourth disk. ‘Epiphanies’ through ‘Sacrifice’ although there were some nice moments in those eps as well.
Characters:
Starbuck: Could she be more awesome? I honestly can’t see how. No, in all honsety, I loved nearly every moment she was on the screen and yes, especially when those moments were with Lee, but really I think I’ve seen [Bad username or site: ”zorb’ @ livejournal.com] mention that she ships Starbuck/Whoever the Hell She Damn Pleases and heh, I think I’m with her. I didn’t think I’d like the whole Anders thing but they were just so happy when they were reunited! So happy! How can I dislike someone who makes her that happy? Honestly. I also continue to love her relationship with Adama.
Lee: Now, I read (or maybe rather glanced at) the criticism levelled at Lee this season and that he got really whiny and annoying and … while I kinda saw it, I didn’t think it was as bad as some made out. Lee was probably my favourite character going into this season and he isn’t really now, and god, he did have his annoying moments from that last scene in ‘Resurrection Ship II’ through ‘Black Market’ and ‘Sacrifice’ (seeing Starbuck creep around in the background when he was lying in the infirmary bed, and him not talking to her in ‘ The Captain’s Hand’ really irked me, because no, Lee, you talk to her!) … but overall, he went through a lot of shit (sometimes rather hilariously so) but then, so did everyone else. Also, wow he sped thought he ranks, didn’t he? I know, I know time of war and all, and well, his father is the commander of the fleet and all, but still … Also, whatever his faults, he was pretty awesome when he shared scenes with Kara. However, Lee/Dee … big fucking Eh.
Adama: Love! How could you not? I adore the relationship (however you want to see it) that has developed between him and Roslin and just, yeah, he rocks so hard. I also am very intrigued and continue to enjoy his scenes with Lee and Kara and yeah, pretty much everyone. Seeing him walk through that almost empty ship after the ‘one year later’ was heartbreaking. Gah. Love. Also, so happy he didn’t let Roslin away with fixing the election.
Roslin: I feel like I should have more to say here because she is such a big part of the show, but I don’t really. She rocks. Much love.
Dee: I liked her last season and this season kinda left me wondering why that was the case. She was cute with Billy but I think perhaps this season she was around a little too much and I don’t really get what’s going on with her and Lee. They tried to develop it, I’ll give them that, but when it happened it still didn’t really make sense and where was the mourning for Billy? And then she was involved in the election corruption and … yeah, I don’t know. I’d really like to go back to not being bugged by her but it might take a bit.
Gaius: See, I don’t know if this is just me, but I think Gaius was the victim of some characterisation issues this season, but it’s hard for me to put my finger on exactly what they are. It’s just … his sudden change at the end of ‘Ephiphanes’ just struck me as kinda … odd. I get that he’s an eogtist and didn’t like Roslin’s opinion of him … but was that really news to him at that point? They’d hardly got on well in the past. Eh. I think I need to think about this a little more, but there definitely was something that bugged me. I loved how they used him in ‘Downloaded’ though. Loved it. He rocked in that ep, and to be fair a few other ones too, James Callis does a great job, but yeah, something about him. Hmm.
Six: I don’t really have a lot to say except the fact that Tricia Helfer rocks and damn, is she hot. The nuclear blast her peace-movement incarnation at the end did kind of confuse me though. To add to the general confusion? To force them to settle on New Caprica?
Boomer/Sharon/Eight: I really liked Boomer in Season 1, though I didn’t really like Caprica!Sharon, which was kinda odd, but there you go. This season I liked Boomer to her ‘death’ and in ‘Downloaded’ and I’m kinda lukewarm of Sharon. I liked her interaction with Adama, her scenes in ‘Home Part I and II’ and with Starbuck in ‘Scar’ and I don’t mind her relationship with Helo, but I’m not filled with love. I am intrigued what happened to her after the ‘one year later’ though.
Helo: Now, I openly admit I was hardly the biggest Helo fan last season. I didn’t really see the big deal and his storyline on Caprica with Sharon bored me, but now, I really do rather like him. Not love, but definitely like. I do love his friendship with Kara though.
Chief Tyrol: Love! On a superficial note, Aaron Douglas did work that beard and glasses on New Caprica. Mmm.
Colnel Tigh: He’s a bit of a bastard, but he always was. I’m kinda ‘eh’ on him really. I do love his dedication to Adama though.
Ellen Tigh I. Can’t. Stand. Her. I think that’s the point and if so, success! She just bugs the living hell out of me and I cringe every time she’s on my TV screen. I may have in fact, asked her rather forcefully to get off my TV screen … yeah, I don’t know, she really bugs me.
Dr Cottle: I didn’t think he’d get his own little bit here but man he rocks. Every time he was on screen I loved him. Snarky bastard. Love him.
‘Shipping:
Like I said I’m pretty much open to Starbuck/Whoever She Likes but if I were to chose one, I would say that I love her and Lee together. It might not end well, but … I just love their scenes together and I’m happy to see that there is still something between them. I am curious about why they’re not talking after the ‘one year later’ though.
I’m also rather fond of Adama/Roslin and I just had a random thought that I could kinda get behind Helo/Chief Tyrol as a ‘ship … don’t quite know why. Not that I really dislike Chief/Callie (though I don’t love it either) but it was a nice thought.
Random Comments:
Wow. Pegasus’s officers really suck, don’t they? It did seem a little contrived to get Lee to captain it, but to be fair, the last guy (and I have forgotten his name) in ‘The Captain’s Hand’ did get a nice ending.
Starbuck shooting Lee in ‘Sacrifice’ made me laugh really hard. I think at that point all the stuff that happened to Lee may have gotten a little too much and got to me. I did feel for Starbuck afterwards though. A lot. But at the time? Hilarious.
Some of the stuff in the previouslies really didn’t happen in the eps, did it? Rather annoying.
I really liked Brother Cavil/Cylon from the season finale. He was pretty awesome.
I also really need to sort out my tags because they really are all over the place. Happily LJ has made this easier, but that's not a task for tonight. I have a whole long weekend to avoid it. ;)
I've hardly been reading any fic recently. It's odd. I used to read so much. Maybe it's the fact that I've been mostly reading LJ on my 'no community LJs' filter and I don't see as many fic posts. Maybe my life has enough drama at the moment that I don't feel the need to supplement it with fic, but then saying that, fic is at least partially about escapism. Or it could be that my main fandom of late is rather bereft of fic in general. (C'mon people, I might have to start writing the Stones fic myself). Saying that, I'm getting back into VMars and BSG so that might get me to read some more. Hmm. Just pondering.
And a meme, because it's been a while:
Comment with the name/title of a fandom I'm aware of, no matter how obvious you think the answers will be, and I'll reply you with the relationships -canon or not - from it I ship. I'll give favorite romantic relationships as well as favorite platonic ones. Also, you're free to reply in subthreads and ask me why I ship or don't ship something.
