... does whatever a spider can.
Jul. 13th, 2012 01:10 amMum was in town for a couple of days this week. It was nice to see her, and she insisted on paying for many meals which made me feel a little guilty, but on the other hand was very sweet of her and I got a really good meal at Floriditas. Mmm clam linguine and apple crumble for dessert.
I also talked her into seeing this:
Disclaimer: it's been years since I saw the first two Raimi Spider-Man movies - although I remember liking them, especially the second one - and my knowledge of Spider-Man canon is a little shaky.
I liked it ... for the most part.
Peter's characterisation seemed slightly off though? I can't put my finger on it. I liked that he was snarkier than the Tobey Maguire version because Peter should be an unrepentant smart-ass but he almost seemed he got a little too confident too quickly? Too something. The train scene where he was apologising was great, and the montage was good (even though Coldplay? for a superhero montage? seriously? But then there was the scene with Gwen's Dad at the kitchen table and ... something else, and I wasn't a fan of that bedroom scene with Gwen either. It made me a little bit uncomfortable. Andrew's performance was really good, it was something in the writing that seemed a little off.
I was also weirded out that he revealed his identity because uh, that's a pretty big deal to Peter - moerso than to a lot of other superheroes. I get it was only to Gwen's Dad (and also Gwen I guess) but he was also pretty cavalier about doing Spider-y things with no mask on ... I guess he might get more protective about it as he goes on? Or that it's something they made a conscious decision to change?
And the thing with the street art on the wall and everyone sort of approving of him in an underground-y way? That's quite a big change in some ways. I'm not saying it's a bad thing (Peter never does catch a break) but it's interesting.
I liked Emma Stone's performance and Gwen but how handy that she worked as an intern at OsCorp. How awesome that Gwen knew exactly how to make the antidote.
Martin Sheen was perfect, and god they used those Uncle Ben voiceovers well. I might be conditioned from many a season of The West Wing, but those hit me right in the feelings. He's so great.
The crane scene was pretty epic and they did some really cool things with the webs - like Peter lounging in the sewers and them acting as feelers.
Awesome Stan Lee cameo. Awesome.
Job hunt continues. Still haven't heard about the one I really wanted to get and I should have by now, so that's not awesome, but then a part of my brain is all, 'well they haven't said no yet either.' So, who knows, but it's probably not good news. I admit I was putting off applying for other jobs in the hope I'd just get that one, but I really need to stop doing that. I did hear about being short-listed for one today though, and a possible short-term contract. So, yeah, not all bad news but I'm so over short-term solutions.
Fandom wise, still quite taken with Suits (especially Harvey and Donna's backstory and Gabriel Macht's face) and of course hockey (why do I like you so much, Eric Staal?)
I also watched all of S1 of Justified last weekend. Good show. Very good show. Especially the season finale. Walton Goggins performance really is great, and Timothy Olyphant's deadpan is a beautiful, beautiful thing. I will be watching more.
Now, the latest Newsroom episode. I can't think this will end well, but I can't turn off the curiosity.
