Overanalysing the popcorn movie.
Jul. 12th, 2006 11:41 pmOh, dude.
I didn't think it was as good as the first one and there were plot-holes but the last half hour or so was incredibly fascinating. I'm still kind of reeling that they 'killed' (beacuse we all know he's coming back) Jack and what they had Elizabeth do. Just, fascinating. That was some character development. After the movie I looked around for someone to discuss this with and alas, if I broached the subject most of the people I went with looked at me funny and were thinking, 'wow, you're thinking about the popcorn movie way too much.'
Anyway, like I said, I didn't think it was as good. I didn't think it gelled nearly as well as the first, probably because of the more complicated plot and the fact it was setting things up for the third movie. It was a little too long, and I do think there were some things that didn't quite work. Did we ever know the details of Jack's original deal with Davy Jones? I may have just missed things.
Up untill Elizabeth and Norrington got on the ship I had only really loved the action sequence on the tribe's island beacuse oh god that was hilarious. However, from then I enjoyed it a lot more.
The three way sword fight and the whole bit on the island with the heart was awesome.
I loved what they did with Norrington. Jack Davenport rocked and I'm very intrigued by his character in general.
Jack was well, Jack. I thought he was lacking a bit at the start, but he picked it up near the end, and I loved him right at the end in front of the beast. Aw, Jack.
Will was ... there. I didn't dislike him and I did feel for him, a little, but at the same time I didn't really care all that much either. I did like that they included his father.
Elizabeth, like I said, fascinated me. I really, really liked what they did with her. Someone had told me that she came off like a bitch, and I don't see it like that, she did what she had to do. It was harsh, but it worked.
The Jack/Elizabeth was interesting and I liked it a lot more than I was expecting. I thought Johnny and Keira played off each other pretty damn well. I'm not about to 'ship them or anything, and I don't know how I feel about Elizabeth being Jack's true love or anything, which I don't think they'll do anyway, but it was fun. And Will can angst his way through the third movie. ;)
My PotC OTP of Jack/Will/Elizabeth was alive and kicking, in a way, but the dynamic has altered a little. Hmmm.
Oh, Orlando it's lucky you're pretty because some of your line delivery was .... yeah. You were pretty though. Pretty clothes and hey, there was even a scene with you almost half naked.
I thought Keira was mostly fine, but there were a couple of places that I winced. On the whole I liked her, but I admit, I do like her. ;)
Johnny and Jack Davenport rocked all before them. As they do.
I liked Tia Dalma a lot.
The rum jokes were funny, but, we get it already.
Undead!Monkey = Awesome.
Barbosa = WTF?!
And yeah, I might be pondering how they're going to fit Keith into the next movie. ;) Are we going to get Jack flashbacks? Beacuse as it was pointed out to me, the next movie is going to be them rescuing Jack ... so what's Jack doing if he's 'dead.' If they showed Jack in the Underworld I would love them forever. I can't see this happening though. I don't know why this idea appeals to me, but it totally does.
Overall, far more intriguing than I thought it would be and mostly, a lot of fun. It had it's issues though.
