LJ! You’re back! *hugs it*

I got online this morning; keen to babble about the latest Terry Pratchett book I read and also catch up because it’s been a while since I checked my friends’ page, and then, no LJ. I honestly felt lost for a while and came to the conclusion that LJ really anchors my Internet experience.

Sure, there are heaps of other sites I visit but LJ, with my e-mail and the BBC News website, is something that I always check. I go through my friends’ list and open all sorts of Mozilla tags for things I find interesting; interesting posts, interesting pictures, interesting links, interesting fics. It usually takes me a couple of hours to get through it all but even if I don’t have the time to check up on other things, I don’t really mind.

My friends’ page has led me all sorts of wonderful places; to meet new people, be involved in new fandoms and listen to new music and yeah, I just felt lost without it this morning. What that says, I don’t really know but it’s worth documenting, if only for me.

LJ-less time did lead me to the CSI section of YTDaW and I’m not sure if that was a good or a bad thing because sometimes, that place really scares me. I almost thought I’d given up on G/S and then again … maybe not. *twitch*

Anyway, what I wanted to post about this morning,

I found this by accident. While checking the library for more P.D James books (yes, this obsession is still going on) and also getting a couple of Patrick O’Brian’s books because I really am intrigued by Stephen Maturin’s spying, I wandered down to the sci-fi/fantasy section, and there it was sitting under ‘recently returned.’ I pounced.

Dude. It is easily one of the best of his I’ve read and that’s actually saying quite a bit, because I haven’t read one book of his I haven’t enjoyed.

The thing about Pratchett is that he effortlessly (well, it seems that way) weaves in the social commentary with the humour and it just works so well. So well. He made all these wonderful points about war, the military, women and tolerance, and they just flowed so beautifully into the narrative along with the humour.

Vimes, as always, was wonderful. Even for the small part he had in the book. He’s easily one of my favourite literary characters. Just, love him.

One of my favourite Vimes quotes:

‘Oh well. The interests of Ankh-Morpork are the interests of all money-lov — oops, sorry, all freedom-loving people everywhere.’

And the bit with the cherry pancake. Vimes and Kennedy allusions. Who would have thought?

Just, <3

But it wasn’t just him. All of the characters really worked. Polly especially, and the bit with her brother and the coloured chalks. So cute, it brought a tear to my eye. (Yes, I know, it’s not hard.)

Also, Polly/Maladicta forever. <3. The ending just sealed it.

The last few days have been good. I played the Who Wants to Be A Millionaire DVD game on Friday night with friends which was a really great but also brought out the not so wonderful side of my personality. Trivia games make me fiercely competitive and also, I can’t keep quiet when I know the answer and other people don’t. Drives me insane.

I’ve even worked for the last two days, which has been really good, for my bank balance if nothing else. I still need to keep looking for another job though and actually do it, instead of just talking about it and half heartedly looking at advertisements. The job will not just land in my lap, as much as I might like it to.

Also, Christchurch has managed turn out a 23-degree day, followed by a 33-degree day and now another around 23-degree day. All of them with blue sky and no clouds in sight. Wow. Summer. Although the 33-degree day was a little too much. I walked home from work and felt like I was baking. Three quarters of Monstrous Regiment was read when I was lying in the shadiest part of the house for about 5 hours.

Finally, the last part of Death in Holy Orders mini-series did not help my obsession or my fascination with Adam/Emma and Red Cap is on tonight. Mmm, triangle.
